Abstract

The Sega Dreamcast is much more than an advanced home video games system, it is a gateway to a whole world of entertainment. Easy to use, it provides access to many types of game experiences and also, via its communications facilities, applications such as online gaming, web browsing and email. This article explains how the "Play and Communicate" and "Unified Entertainment World " concepts behind the Dreamcast platform allow access to all of these entertainment areas, the decisions that molded the architecture, and the technologies used to finally implement the concepts. It is also hoped that it provides a glimpse of the many applications that are made possible by this radically new approach.
