Abstract

Many organizations today are using the Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Model to develop databases, install commercial-off-the-shelf products, offer services, or perform maintenance. Small organizations or organizations with small projects are also attempting to use it and are experiencing difficulty applying the CMM to their nontraditional development efforts. The authors show how these organizations can improve their project planning process using the CMM by focusing on the intent of the CMM, instead of treating its practices as gospel.
