The demand for increased efficiency and effectiveness of our software processes places measurement demands on the software engineering community beyond those traditionally practiced. Statistical and process thinking principles lead to the use of statistical process control methods to determine consistency and capability of the processes used to develop software. This article stems from a technical collaboration between the Software Engineering Institute and the Space Shuttle Onboard Software Project (collaboration established through Lockheed Martin at the time). The analytic factors involved in using statistical process control to analyze process behavior are discussed using the inspection process as the vehicle to illustrate the role of these factors.
