Abstract

The authors propose a common terminology for the verification, validation, and testing (VVT) of knowledge-based systems. The authors' goal is to reach a broad consensus in the VVT community and make the field transparent to nonspecialists. Since terminology needs to evolve and cannot be prescribed normatively, the terminology presented should be considered a proposal that takes into account the purpose of quality assurance methods. Definitions for a small number of general terms, on the basis of which specific VVT problems can be classified according to their specific features, are presented. The meanings of the terms verification, validation, testing, and evaluation are listed, and their relation to classical software engineering terms is discussed.
