Abstract

The new science of genomics offers tremendous challenges and opportunities for computational scientists. Advances in biotechnology have produced enormous volumes of information about the DNA sequences and proteins of many different organisms, ranging from the smallest bacteria to humans. The existence of these sequences has spurred research and development of new computational tools for making scientific discoveries in genomic data, but the rate of data generation is outpacing scientists' ability to analyze the data. The author describes some of the latest computational techniques used to solve the gene-finding problem, one of the most pressing problems involved in DNA sequence analysis.
