Abstract

Biomedical information extraction is an area of research where the two disciplines of bioinformatics and natural language processing meet to address the shared recognition that some means of automatically extracting interesting pieces of information from the rapidly growing collection of archived biomedical literature must be sought for beyond simple keyword extraction. We review recent approaches to biomedical information extraction and illustrate the range of complexities in the biomedical literature data, in order to motivate and present an implemented system that utilizes a Combinatory Categorial Grammar as a full-fledged natural language grammar, which, though not tuned to the biomedical domain, shows a very encouraging performance to justify the use of a full grammar formalism.
