Abstract

A general framework is presented for considering requirements for decision support particularly in environmental applications. Two particular applications are described, one for real-time advice on flood control, the other for large-scale flood modelling and prevention. The needs for supporting the intended end users in their decision making are very different, yet they both exemplify aspects of the general framework. Some guidelines are proposed on what knowledge must be represented to provide effective decision support within this framework, and how this can be implemented.
