In this paper we describe several areas of research in online software upgrading where more attention is needed. In particular, we identify some industry trends that raise new issues that must be addressed in systems that provide online upgrading capabilities for applications running on hosts connected to the Internet. We also discuss what our research community must to do make our research more practicable in production systems.
