The success of groupware lies partially with its design. Welldesigned groupware will still fail to meet its users' expectations if those users do not feel empowered by its use. Providing groups of users with the means of tailoring groupware in the wider context of group work may be the answer. This paper introduces our vision for tailoring group work, clarifies the principles underlying tailoring group work, and lays out the research approach we are currently taking, in expectation of stimulating interest in this challenging area.
