This paper focuses on the choices in organizational design — specifically, on the choices in structure, reward systems, and people to support the information and decision processes employed in accomplishing organizational tasks. Forces in the changing IS development environment plus characteristics of IS personnel greatly influence organizational design requirements. The self-managed IS development team emerges as an appealing organizational design to meet these requirements. Changes which must accompany the creation of self-managed IS development teams are offered, plus some of the benefits of these teams, and some of their problems.
