BOKS is a knowledge based system which implements the "Bouwstoffenbesluit" (Bsb), the Dutch regulations on the use of building materials. Since the Bsb is a complex set of rules, which many people need to adhere to, a knowledge based system was seen as an ideal way to allow people to check whether they are using building materials according to the law. BOKS was implemented as a first generation rule-based system using decision tables. This paper discusses BOKS, the reasons for its success as a knowledge based system, its implementation and how that implementation could be improved upon, and makes a comparison between BOKS and related systems.
