Abstract

A successful development team for Web applications must be more versatile and concerned with the requirements of the end users than a traditional software development team. The World Wide Web has made it possible for new players to participate in such development work and also introduced new and radically different technologies for applications development. This paper sets out a rationale for considering the Web environment as a new medium, calling for a new paradigm of system development activities and operation. It presents a classification of the participants and a hierarchy for their skills. This classification helps in devising a strategy for successful reskilling of the development team and in creating the basis for the formulation of the corresponding development methodology. The required skills are mapped into three broad areas: management, technical and human interface. The classification scheme is widely applicable, and is useful in formulating and assessing course and training objectives, job descriptions, the skills basis for Web projects and the suitability of "consultants".
