A new and efficient encoder suitable for encoding application layer PDU's is suggested. Because of its good efficiency, it is particularly useful for fieldbus networks where real time behaviour is a major requirement. The encoder is able to work with ASN. 1 syntax rules and produces a new transfer syntax which can be negotiated with the ISO presentation layer. The overhead length required by the new encoder is at least half of that required by ASN. 1 encoding. Several examples using MMS protocol data units demonstrate the enhanced features of the new encoder.
