Abstract

Current networks integrate multiple transport technologies to exploit their relative advantages and different functionalities, and these are multilayer networks combining IP/ATM/SDH/WDM technologies. To provide end to end survivability, different restoration mechanisms at different layers must be combined efficiently in order to achieve fast restoration, maximum availability and minimum restoration cost. This paper describes the key issues associated with the implementation of restoration in a multilayer network. Moreover, the "best" strategies proposed so far are presented and the current state of standardisation is discussed. Finally, current unresolved issues and open problems are highlighted.
