Scalability is an important issue in distributed virtualsimulation environments (DVSE) supported by the HighLevel Architecture. A Cluster-based DVSE (CDVSE)isone way to scale DVSEs using an additional device calleda cluster gateway (CGATE). CGATEs interlink discretefederations into an integrated cluster-based architecture. This paper discusses the design and issues involved in thedevelopment of CGATE. Issues related to interactionamong multiple cluster-based federations are alsoexamined.Three RTI service categories, i.e. federationmanagement, declaration management and objectmanagement, are currently supported in CDVSE toenable a modest HLA distributed simulation. StandardRTI services are extended to the inter-cluster interactionand facilitate the operation of CGATE while maintainingcompliance to the HLA interface specification.Experiments have been carried out to measure the latencyincurred in passing though the CGATE and showencouraging results.
