Abstract

Changes in the computing industry can be expected to maintain their spectacular growth rate of recent years. The implications of these changes for programming languages, and on the techniques required by computer software professionals, are briefly discussed. In particular, the role of APL in this changing environment is analysed, with the intention of identifying some deficiencies in the current status of the language. Possible modifications are then suggested, in order to develop APL into an even more useful and generally acceptable tool for problem solving.
