Abstract

An attempt is made to establish a convention that will make possible an interactive multilevel definition of APL functions. In accordance with this convention, functions can be defined at two levels: First an outline (flow-chart) is specified, this being followed by a detailed specification of the outline, prompted by the APL system. The convention is based on Iverson's direct definition form and enables the user to define long functions in an interactive manner. Preliminary experience with this convention indicates that it can improve the readability of APL functions
