Abstract

A general purpose graphics programming language should provide a means for specifying not only the lines, characters, and/or surfaces which compose a picture but also parameters such as the intensity of a particular object in the picture and the relative position of one object with respect to another in the picture. This paper will address the manner in which graphics programming languages associate display parameters with display objects. The syntax of the particular graphics programming language will not be considered, nor will the capabilities of the display hardware with which the language is associated. Instead, the paper will concentrate on the semantics of display parameter specification.
