Present conventions for numeric representation are considered inadequate to serve the needs of applied computing. Thus an augmented digital number system is proposed for use in programming languages and in digital computers. Special symbols are proposed for numbers too large, too small or too close to zero to be represented in the normal digital number system, or which are undefined. Properties of mappings among and between digital number systems are used to justify the augments chosen. Finally a suggestion is made for a new floating point word format that will serve all the above needs and will greatly extend the exponent range of floating point numbers.
