Abstract

This paper discusses the process of attaching a meaning to an initially strictly formal syntactic structure. Six levels of semantics are defined, each deeper level providing an enrichment of meaning. A formalism is developed which allows the exact description of the semantics of mathematical operators, expressions and statements, including array arithmetic. The purpose of declarations in a programming language is discussed, the notion of 'the correctness of a program' is analyzed, and conclusions are drawn for the construction of an interactive system.
