The first part of this paper describes AMS, a software monitor that is activated by both timing information and system events. The structure of the monitor is described and typical results are displayed. The last half of the paper examines the potential use of this type of monitor as an integral part of a dynamic control algorithm. A simulation model serves as an experimental vehicle to quantitatively evaluate some of the potential improvements which are possible when system performance data is used in a dynamic control algorithm.
