The results of a survey of individuals working in the systems programming and operating systems areas are presented in an attempt to characterize the academic/industry “gap” in this area. The implications of this gap are then presented for both the present curriculum in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh and for college/university curricula in general.
