Abstract

In this article we explore the short and largelyundocumented history of electronic government, discussthe literature of e-government at the local governmentlevel, and document the adoption and sophistication of e-governmentamong US local governments. We employdata from a survey conducted in the winter of 2000 toexamine local government adoption of electronicgovernment. We compare the results of that survey to anormative model of e-government maturity. We havefound that the emergence of electronic government at thelocal level is still in its formative stages. Local e-governmentofferings tended to be more basic whencompared to the normative model although many localgovernments indicate that they have plans to developmore sophisticated offerings in the future. E-governmentadoption also generally tracks well with previouslydocumented patterns of technology adoption.
