Abstract

Approaches to software measurement have normally been based on the measurement of models of the software rather than the software itself and, although many software documents are written in languages with well-defined syntax and semantics, the well-developed theory of programming languages is not normally used as a basis for software measurement. The paper advocates the use of language-based approaches to software measurement and outlines some recent work in which the authors have been involved.
