Abstract

Currently, Grid research as well as distributeddatabase research deals with data replication butboth tackle the problem from different points ofview. The aim of this paper is to outline bothapproaches and try to find commonalities betweenthe two worlds in order to have a most efficientData Grid that manages data stored in objectorienteddatabases. Our target object-orienteddatabase management system is Objectivity/DBwhich is currently the database of choice in someexisting High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments aswell as in next generation experiments at CERN.The characteristics of Data Grids are described, especially within the High Energy Physicscommunity, and needs for Data Grids are defined. The Globus toolkit is the Grid middle-ware onwhich we base our discussions on Grid research.
