Nursing informatics is a specialty in nursing that combines computer science, technology, and the nursing process to support the practice of nursing and the delivery of nursing care. Nursing informatics was only recently designated a specialty by the American Nursing Association (ANA) (in 1992) with the first certification exam offered in October of 1996. A significant benefit of nursing informatics is that it enables the nurse to take the technology, translate the use of the technology to direct patient care, and communicate that translation to the clinicians who will use the tool. As certain projects demonstrate, such as project AKAMAI in the Pacific, we now have the ability to deliver care across distances, via devices in the home, remote call centers, and sophisticated communication and technology advancements. A willingness to explore and use new technology tools to improve patient care delivery will be the challenges that nurses will have in the new millennium.
