Abstract

In this paper, we propose the novel concept of probabilisticdesign for multimedia systems and a methodology toquickly explore such design space at an early design stage. The probabilistic design is motivated by the challenge ofhow to design, but not over-design, multimedia embeddedsystems while systematically incorporating such application'sperformance requirements, uncertainties in executiontime, and tolerance for reasonable execution failures. Ourgoal is to bridge the gap between real-time analysis andembedded software implementation for rapid and economic(multimedia) system prototyping. Our method takes advantageof multimedia system's unique features mentionedabove to relax the rigid hardware requirements for softwareimplementation and eventually avoid over-designingthe system.
