Abstract

This paper investigates the main issues related to thedefinition of abstraction tools for deriving high-leveldescriptions of complex geometric models. Among thewide range of shape descriptors, topological graph-likerepresentations not only give a powerful andsynthetic sketch of the object, but also capture itsinner structure, that is how features connect togetherto give the overall shape. This aspect makes themuseful to describe complex 3D objects in variousapplications like modelling, morphing, matching andrecognition. The paper surveys the main properties ofskeletons developed in Shape Modelling forrepresenting objects.
