This paper summarizes our NSF funded project, aPC-based multi-user learning environment: Multi-UserVirtual Environment Experiential Simulator (MUVEES).The goal of this project is to create and evaluategraphical multi-user virtual environments that usedigitized museum resources to enhance middle schoolstudents' motivation and learning about science. Here, wediscuss the design, implementation, and applications ofMUVEES. We present its structure, efficient approachesthat achieve more realistic avatar behaviors, andpedagogical strategies that foster strong learningoutcomes across a wide range of individual studentcharacteristics. Our preliminary results indicate thatMUVEES is a powerful vehicle for collaboration andlearning. We believe that our system and implementationmethods will help improve future multi-user virtualenvironments.
