Abstract

Application Layer Multicast (ALM) can be useful formany types of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications. Thepaper compares a group of ALM algorithms, that takeinto account network topology measurements, usingMonte-Carlo simulation. A new algorithm, calledFastcast, is introduced. Fastcast allows to control thetradeoff between used traffic and the worst-case length ofthe application layer path. ALM algorithms for P2Papplications can benefit from the possibility of limitingthe number of children in the ALM tree, since many nodescould be connected by slow modem connections. Thepaper studies the impact of such a limitation on ALMalgorithm performance.
