New research perspectives opened up by the combination of IP and WDM technologies present an excellent opportunity for reformulating certain aspects of multicast transmission, bringing them more in line with the needs of future generations of IP internetworking. This paper includes new proposals for handling state information about the multicast distribution tree, as well as for the establishment of label-based multicast paths. These proposals allow better scalability and adaptation of multicast transmission to IP internets based on optically switched networks, exploiting the favourable characteristics of such promising approaches as optical burst switching (OBS) and Generalised MPLS (GMPLS).
