For on-line character recognition, we have designed clockwise/counterclockwise direction-change features, replacing the eight kinds of direction-change features of the previous method. These new features express where and in which direction (clockwise/counterclockwise) each of the character's coordinates change. These features use only two kinds of features patterns. In this paper, we propose a new method using both directional features and clockwise/counter-clockwise direction-change features. The results of experiments with freely written Japanese characters demonstrate that our new method reduces the size of the standard feature patterns and shortens the processing time over those of our previous method while maintaining a high recognition rate.
