Abstract

Active business process support utilizing workflow technologyis promising for building information systems thatare flexible regarding both business and correspondingIT infrastructure transformation. To achieve this, conceptualmodels of work processes have to be aligned withinterests of several stakeholders, including business professionals and users. In particular, user access to processmodels presuppose comprehensible in addition to expressivemodels. We propose a framework for evaluatingquality in process modeling languages (PMLs) and models. It is applied to a representative sample of flexibleworkflow products and prototypes. We study the propertiesof the various products' underlying PMLs, and derivetheir first cut ontology, or meta-model. In carrying out theevaluation, we show the applicability of our framework, and point out some research opportunities in areas wherethe products differ widely or carry similar deficiencies.
