Abstract

A critical step in changing organizational structuresAnd systems is the design of models that prescribe futureconfigurations. However, little research has been doneon the development of such "to-be" models. It appearsthat improving this step can home a significant impact onthe success of the change effort as a whole. Using thefocus theory of group productivity, we developed andevaluated a process for creating "to-be" models andtested it with an organization undergoing reengineering. Results suggest that the combined use of collaborativetechnology and animated simulation gives organizationmembers a better understanding of current processesand problems associated with them and helps to generatesignificant ideas for process improvement. Specialattention is required to facilitation methods and ideageneration techniques that are designed to elicit radicalchange ideas in order to prevent a dominating focus onincremental improvement ideas.
