Abstract

The skills, knowledge, and abilities of today's work forcerequire continuous improvement. As a knowledge-basedglobal economy evolves, organizations must strive tooptimize human and intellectual capital. This paperexamines some aspects of intelligent organizations. Inparticular, it explores the use of information technologyto support memory, knowledge, and learning inorganizations. An adaptive hypermedia system isdescribed which incorporates hypertext navigation, information filtering, and multimedia artifacts to providehigh-level query and browsing capabilities forinformation repositories. Design issues for such a systemare discussed along with limitations imposed by currenttechnological constraints. The system would includetools to dynamically store and retrieve organizationalmemory electronically. Such a system would providemechanisms to access information, context in which tounderstand past and present events, and a mechanism tobring a multitude of lessons and experiences to bear onpresent and future activities.
