Abstract

This paper compares models of technologyadoption for small manufacturing enterprises(SMES) and notes that a learning model capturesmuch of the research findings across a wide rangeof settings. The paper reviews the implication ofsuch a model for SME adoption of electroniccommerce technology (ECT). Adopting thistechnology is necessary if SMEs are to participatein the emerging National InformationInfrastructure (M) and its defense counterpart(DIJ). These systems are expected to provide USSMES with competitive advantages, but only ifSMES implement technology that enable them touse this network. Evidence suggests that smallfirms currently are ill-equipped to realize benefitsfrom the NII. Because SMES contributesignificant[y to the creation of jobs and payrollsfor the US economy, their contribution could be atrisk unless they are able to participate in theemerging electronic network. The paperconcludes with a suggested strategy foraccelerating the adoption process.
