The more complex a network becomes, the more reliableand intelligent a network management system must be toconsistently monitor the network and detect abnormalsituations in a timely manner as they occur. Expertsystem techniques have been widely accepted to createnetwork management systems. Despite the fact that thereare a number of network management systems, most ofthem deal only with problems at the lower layers of thenetwork hierarchy (the data link, or the network layer). The nature of problems at the application level signifi-cantly differs from of those that occur at the lower levels.Lower layer problems are well-understood while problemsat the application level are complex, applicationdependent, and distinct from one another. Consequently,a network management system, in particular a faultmanagement system, used at this level should be able tocope with these difficulties and dependencies. We proposea hybrid system which consists of neural networkmodule and a rule-based system for monitoring anddiagnosing problems occur at the application level. Thedomain name system (DNS) was selected as a testbedapplication for the prototype system.
