A technique for the detection and the segmentation oftouching characters in mathematical expressions is presented. In the detection stage, a connected component initiallyrecognized into some category is judged as a candidateof touched characters if its feature values deviate fromthe standard feature values of the category. In the segmentationstage, two component characters of the candidateare decided by the comparison with touching character imagessynthesized from two single character images. Experimentalresults showed the effectiveness on the accuracy improvementof the recognition of mathematical expressions.
