In this paper, we propose a generalized shock modelfor the enhancement and restoration of degradedgray-level character images. This model is a quasi-linearhyperbolic partial differential equation withdiscontinuous coefficients, based on a recently-publishedwork. The model was extended to peeling charactershapes with a uniform and centered width of value K.These processing tools may significantly improve thesubsequent stages of the character image recognitiontask. Both models have been tested on a set of gray-levelcharacter images of varying quality from the CEDARdatabase, and experimental results have proved theefficiency and effectiveness of such modeling.
