XP emphasises underlying values as well as the morevisible twelve practices. In this paper we explore therelationship between practices and values from twoperspectives: empirical and theoretical. We presentempirical evidence that the twelve practices create acommunity in which the XP values are supported andsustained. We also present models of culture from otherdomains which suggest that an alternative set of practicescan produce a community with the same underlyingvalues. We conclude that the twelve practices are bothsignificant and not significant.
