This paper presents a formal analysis of social interactions withinmulti-agent systems. The fundamental building blocks of suchsystems are social agents which can be individuals or aggregationsof agents whose structure can be formally characterised in terms ofroles and relationships between them. Agents are free to joinsocial agents while in pursuit of their own objectives, but at thesame time they have to balance their preferences and theircommitments. Stability and regulation of behaviour within amulti-agent system and within social agents is accounted for bymeans of commitments, obligations and rights.
