Abstract

This paper draws upon EU-funded research conducted by the authors as part of the Sustainable Accommodation in the New Economy Project (SANE IST 2000-25257). It describes the development in that project of the Interaction Space Theory that underpins the Model of Mediated Communication for Nomadic Knowledge Workers and its relation to extended theoretical explorations of the Common Ground Approach. Our contribution to the workshop will be to outline the theoretical and methodological underpinnings for the development of collaborative tools, adaptive and responsive to the requirements of their 'nomadic' users. We will also consider new concepts, developed in order to extend the Common Ground approach for the study of language use, so that it may account for communication in computer-mediated environments.
