This paper presents a ring-based SDH optical core network design problem with multiple constraints. A novel evolutionary algorithm (EA) is developed to successfully find near-optimal solutions for a realistic case study. Compared to a genetic algorithm, this EA is demonstrated to be more efficient and effective by experimental simulation results, and shows promise for tackling ring-based network design problems.
