This paper presents a two-stage local search methodfor synthesizing finite precision FIR filter coefficients,with the aim to reduce the number of addition/subtractionin the realization of linear phase FIR filters. In the firststage, an initial set of coefficients is formed by taking intoconsideration the sensitivities of coefficients on frequencyresponse. In the second stage, a tree search algorithm isutilized to achieve the objective function specified by thedesirable Normalized Peak Ripple. The size of the searchspace is also studied.
