Abstract

Wireless mobile multimedia networks trend to adoptmicro/pico-cellular architectures in order to earn higherspectral efficiency and support higher data rate than thatof macro-cellular systems. Using small cell sizearchitecture results in an increase of call handoffs. Theguard-channel strategies are adopted to reduce the forceterminating probability of handoff calls. Meanwhile, inmobile multimedia networks, guard channels are alsoused to guarantee the QoS of data service. However, reserving too many guard channels, on the other hand, results in bandwidth inefficiency. In this paper, thenumber of guard channels is reduced to increase thebandwidth utilization. We proposed that parts of voiceguard channels share with data traffic but the voicetraffic has higher priority in an integrated voice/datamobile network. This scheme keeps the QoS of both on thevoice and data service and increase the bandwidthutilization.
