Abstract

This paper presents an approach for mappinglayouts of parametric surface patches to a target 3Dgeometry. Its main contribution is to facilitate thefeature based placement of an arbitrary network ofpatches, assuring that both boundaries and parametricflow conform to features of the target shape. Thetechnique, referred to as dynamic templates, describesthe algorithms and interface of a reverse engineeringsystem, Paraform, that integrates techniques relying ona judicious choice of automation and user guidedtools. Our approach is based on a novel use ofconstrained optimization for the fairing of structuredsurface grids, where grid points can be unconstrainedin 3D or constrained to lie within the parameter spaceof curves, surfaces, or other geometry. We present ourresults as case studies in large industrial workflowproblems, involving the reuse of geometric data.
