Abstract

Equation-based congestion control has been a promisingalternative to TCP for real-time multimedia streamingover the Internet. However, its behavior remains unknownin the mobile ad hoc wireless network (MANET) domain. Inthis paper, we study the behavior of TFRC (TCP FriendlyRate Control [3, 4]) over a wide range of MANET scenarios,in terms of throughput fairness and smoothness. Our resultshows that while TFRC is able to maintain throughputsmoothness in MANET, it obtains less throughput than thecompeting TCP .ows (i.e., being conservative). We analyzeseveral factors contributing to TFRC's conservative behaviorin MANET, many of which are inherent to the MANETnetwork. We also show that TFRC's conservative behaviorcannot be completely corrected by tuning its loss event intervalestimator. Our study shows the limitations of applyingTFRC to the MANET domain, and reveals some fundamentaldifficulties in doing so.
