We study latency fluctuation during UDP packetexchange in ad hoc wireless groups. We focus on wirelessmedia access using carrier sensing multiple access withcollision avoidance, specifically the 802.11 protocol. Weshow that there can be large intermittent fluctuations intransmission times when packet exchange is done usingUDP unicast. We show how the conditions for the onsetof large fluctuations can be estimated, and how theseestimates can be used in the design of applications whichrequire real-time data exchanges with low latency.
