Abstract

We discuss the use of electronic process guides insoftware engineering projects. We then presentexisting methods for constructing electronic processguides by defining a set of common processes for acompany. Several approaches from the softwareengineering and management literature are presented. We then go on to propose a new method toconstruct process description in software engineering:using process workshops as a tool to reach consensuson work practice. In defining processes, we have found it effective toinvolve software developers - in order to get simple, realistic descriptions with accurate detail and ensurecompany commitment in an efficient manner. Wedescribe our workshop-oriented method to defineprocesses, which we have been using in small softwarecompanies, and show examples of results. We give a brief description of a case study wherewe defined processes and helped construct anelectronic process guide in a small software companyin Norway.
