This article presents the DOPE system for exploring large online resources in the area of drug research. It gives an overview of the system and explains the use of Semantic Web technology for providing thesaurus-based access to existing resources using automatic indexing, RDF-based querying, and concept-based visualization of results. The authors also report results of a user study on the system's benefits for information search and exploration. Their experiences and the feedback they received suggest that Semantic Web technology can support the exploration of large document repositories in a real-world setting. Concept-based information visualization is less suitable for searching specific information but provides good support for the exploration of mostly unknown data.
